Mark Vanstone has carried on a legal practice in his hometown of Saskatoon since 1995, when he was admitted to the Saskatchewan Bar.

His primary area of interest is the courtroom. He is frequently there on both civil and criminal matters, and has handled a wide variety of cases in Provincial Court, the Court of Queen’s Bench, and the Court of Appeal for Saskatchewan.

He has successfully handled complex civil cases for plaintiffs and defendants in business disputes, employment matters, personal injury cases, negligence claims and insurance-related matters. Mark also appeared as legal counsel at the North Battleford Water Inquiry.

Divorce and family law is an area of special expertise, as Mark was legal counsel in a case which pioneered ‘parallel parenting’ in Saskatchewan. Another of his custody matters received national media attention when his client, a Saskatoon father, fought for custody of his infant son in a controversial and highly publicized case.

Mark is also a determined defence counsel and has broad experience in criminal matters, having represented clients in many cases in both Saskatchewan and Alberta. He is a member of the Saskatoon Criminal Defence Lawyers Association and has handled cases involving drug charges, homicides, criminal negligence, sexual assault, impaired driving, bail hearings and others. Mark has a special interest in the legal and constitutional issues in roadside arrests and searches, and has written a number of articles on the topic, including one published by the National Criminal Law Program, as well as others in The Advocate, the quarterly periodical of the Saskatchewan Trial Lawyers Association (STLA).

Mark is committed to continuing legal education and the enhancement of lawyers’ skills across Saskatchewan. To that end he has been an executive member of the STLA since 2001, and the editor of The Advocate since 2002, contributing many articles and columns over the years. Mark has worked with law students as well, including the U. of S. Western Cup moot team, and through his ongoing volunteer efforts with Community Legal Assistance Services for Saskatoon Inner-City (CLASSIC). Mark is also an independent counsel for children and youth through the Saskatchewan Children’s Advocate Office.
